What it records

The same information as the NFPA 72 system record of completion (Figure 7.8.2(a)), in our words: who installed, services, tests and monitors the system; where its documents are kept; the control unit and firmware; primary and secondary power with the calculated battery capacity; the class and survivability of each circuit type; how many of each initiating device and notification appliance; the control functions it runs (door releases, HVAC shutdown, dampers, elevator recall); interconnected systems; the acceptance test; and the installer’s and tester’s signed statements.

Questions

When is the record of completion filled in?

When a new fire alarm system — or a change to an existing one — is accepted. The installing contractor completes it at the acceptance test, and it stays with the system’s record documents.

Do I have to use the NFPA form itself?

NFPA 72 allows the record to be kept on its forms or on another record that includes the same information, and calls its figures samples rather than a required layout. This form asks for that information in its own words. Your authority having jurisdiction decides what it accepts.

What changed between the 2019 and 2022 editions?

On the main form, two things: the circuits table says «dual pathway» instead of «dual media pathway», and the notification appliance table adds whether each type is on a notification appliance circuit (NAC) or a signaling line circuit (SLC). The power supplement renames «energy storage systems (ESS)» to «stored-energy emergency power supply systems (SEPSS)». Switch the edition at the top and the form follows.

Which supplements are included?

Notification appliance power panels, interconnected systems, and deviations from adopted codes are included as optional sections. The emergency communications (voice evacuation, mass notification, two-way) and power-system supplements are not in this free form yet.
